What information belongs in a timesheet

A complete timesheet should contain all relevant information on working time documentation in order to fulfil the statutory recording obligation. Timesheets and report slips for tradespeople are both used to record working hours, but differ in the level of detail and intended use.

The timesheet is the most common way of recording general working hours. It records attendance and absence times per day as well as breaks in order to determine the actual working time. This forms the basis for employee payroll accounting.

The report sheet is used by tradespeople or other service providers to keep detailed records of individual activities during working hours. The report slip provides information on how much time an employee has invested in a project or order. The information from the report slip can be used to create invoices for customers, for example.

Who needs a time sheet

Recording working hours is required by law. According to the 2019 judgement of the European Court of Justice, employers are obliged to introduce an objective, reliable and accessible system for recording daily working hours. The BAG ruling from 2022 makes it the duty of every employer to document employees’ working hours using a timesheet, for example. This applies to large and small trades. Small craft businesses are just as obliged as large haulage companies, etc.
